HEART MIND & MATTER ARTIST’S STATEMENT

 

  

Each painting is an exploration; a search for purity, essence... that ineffable TRUTH.  It is a journey to and with my often elusive inner voice and it grasps more than that of the linear intellectual mind. When I begin work on my abstract watercolors, I wait for the hunger to rise.  In twists, pulls, itches, groans, it comes, for...a color -- a smooth long glide of a stroke -- a smash and splatter -- a line with my funny brush.  Each move leads to the next and the painting begins, at some point, to add its own unique voice to the process.  Now I am definitely not in charge; I am an enabler. This is not an easy path.  It is not fun.  It is a battle for the vast unknown of me with the so small known. And, I am not always successful, but when I am, when this painting--a visible representation of the mystery I am exploring--completes itself.....there are no words. The freshness, the wildness of watercolor has, for me, made it the most exciting of mediums.  Like riding an untamed horse, it is a partnership requiring extreme wakefulness--the necessary element as I paint to clear some critical path, to learn, and to grow.  Upon this wild horse I can charge against my preconceptions-- veils before some certain truth.
